Ernest Sugden
Ernest Sugden started biking at the beginning of the 20th century and joined the Clarion Cycling Club in 1902, eventually forming a Halifax section and becoming national secretary of the organisation in 1935. He would hold this post for 33 years and became a very well known figure in the biking world. He was an innovator too, for he pioneered the idea of a side-car for pedal cycles, which caught on for a while.
He was also Councillor Ernest Sugden, a Labour member of the old Halifax Town Council, representing the Kingston ward for 17 years. And he was a musician – a
picture in his family's archive shows him playing piano with a dance band at King Cross Working men's Club.
