Patrick and Marilyn Dare, Eileen Trevethick and Ryszard Malinsky
are trying to prove that theirs is the oldest pub in Nottingham.
THE TRIP
Patrick and Marilyn meet up with dendrochronologist Bob Howard and Martin Hubbard, The Trip architect, and discuss
the best timbers for Bob to sample. He then drills out some cores.
Dr Trevor Foulds, a documentary historian, joins Patrick and Marilyn
to examine their deeds, which go back to 1778. From these, they
learn that the pub was once called The Pilgrim and Anne Footit
was the tenant. Trevor suggests looking for earlier deeds and
wills under those names.
THE HISTORY ROOM
Using the wills index and the Brewhouse Yard index, Patrick and Marilyn have found three wills and three probate
inventories. The oldest probate inventory -- for George Thorpe
-- dates from 1688, mentions brewing material and describes the
building as having a 'rock room'.
THE TRIP
Helped by Dr Phil Dixon, a reader in medieval archaeology, Patrick
and Marilyn look for features corresponding to those listed in
the probate inventory.
BREWHOUSE YARD MUSEUM
Marilyn and Eileen meet Suella Postles, the keeper of social history,
who shows them the site of The Trip on maps regressing to 1610. She tells them that there are references
to mills there in manorial court rolls from the 13th century,
but archaeological excavations have yielded nothing from before
the 17th century.
NOTTINGHAM CASTLE
Patrick and Ryszard, accompanied by caves expert Dr Tony Waltham
and Phil Dixon, go up Mortimer's Hole. When they arrive at the castle, Phil discusses its history and
whether there might have been a brewhouse at the bottom of the
rock.
THE HISTORY ROOM
The team looks through some relevant 13th-century documents but
can find no references to a brewhouse or an inn. They feel frustrated
because many other documents are held not in Nottingham but at
the Public Record Office in Kew, London.
THE BELL
Bob Howard reveals the dendro dates he got from the timbers at the Trip: 1585.
