'Some of the Pilgrims'

PROLOGUE
The Evolution of the Pilgrims Club.

Some nine or ten years ago, two ardent young cyclists, Mr Frank Neighbour and Mr Fred Heyward went for several rides in company on Saturday evenings, to places of interest round about Cranford.

This seemed such a good idea, that some other young cyclists (myself among the number), speedily joined forces with the two above mentioned; the result being a good many very enjoyable rides, and a fairly thorough knowledge of the country for about fifteen miles round Cranford.

As the years passed, however, most of the original members, owing to various other interests arising, drifted out of the Club and as other recruits did not join at the same rate, the Club, in spite of spasmodic attempts at revival by some of the keener riders, became a very feeble concern.

It seemed such a pity to let things slide altogether, that, early in the present year, one or two of our newer members have co-operated in the management of affairs; and under enthusiastic leadership we are enjoying about the most successful season of any since the formation of the Club.

Among other innovations, Mr Whittington has induced the members in turn (often under protest), to write a weekly report on the rides undertaken; to be published, together with many photographs of the members, at the close of the season, as an illustrated record of the country explored during the summer, and the following pages will shew how successsfully his idea has worked out in practice.

I close this with very hearty wishes for the continued prosperity of the Pilgrims Club; and may we have as good times next year as this.

FRED SHAWYER.
